A Lasting Impression

There’s no doubt about it – beach holidays do get under your skin – and stay there for quite some time!

The poor Committee is always asked to take a detour via various beach shacks for sale during our vacations and I try to sell him the idea of working less and living a simpler life.

The Committee indulges my strange notions every year and then we head back home to the real world and resume where we left off.

So one year I decided if we couldn’t live in a beach shack, I’d “create” a beach shack on our outdoor deck (minus the sand and waves – and usually the sunshine too!)

Here is the result:

A lot of indoor furniture, tablecloths and cushions were hauled outside …

There were plenty of shells to go around ….

There was a lounge and a BBQ for long, lazy summer evenings …

And an indoor display case that came outdoors – much to the Committee’s horror!

And a deliciously quiet place to read and contemplate my achievements ….

Unfortunately when you are home though it’s hard to justify those quiet moments because there is always so much to do.

Slowly, slowly my beach was being used less frequently – Tottie and Teddy went back to school and resumed after-school activities, the Committee and I went back to work and life got in the way – but there were a few members of the family who were loving their at-home “beach” …

Dee Dee adored the floor mat-covered chair (yes that is a different cat!)

And Casper sat with a lot more dignity amongst it all and soaked up the atmosphere!

But, when winter hit, even the felines deserted the ship, most of the furniture was moved back indoors and my “beach” became the much-reduced display that it is to this day …

Still very cheery and happy, but much-reduced.

As with a seaside holiday, my “beach” experiment did leave a lasting impression though. It sparked a creative need in me to make interesting spaces, use homewares in a way they weren’t always intended to be used and to up cycle items.

Here is a sneak peek at two past-their-used-by-date pieces of furniture that get the treatment over the next few weeks …

Here are some hints about what is to come …

Until next time …
